Batu & Bromo 3D2N — Cool Hills and Volcano Sunrise from Surabaya

About this tour

Spend the first two days in Batu, the cool hill town west of Malang: the colonial-era Wonosari tea estate, Coban Rondo waterfall, Songgoriti hot spring, Selecta's flower gardens and an apple orchard — all adjustable to your taste. On day three a 4WD Jeep takes you up Mount Penanjakan for the Bromo sunrise, then across the Sea of Sand to the crater, with an optional stop at Madakaripura Waterfall on the way back. An easy pace that suits families and first-time visitors to East Java.

Full itinerary

Day 1

1. 10:00

   Pickup in Surabaya, head for Batu

   Your driver meets you at your Surabaya hotel or the airport. Batu is 2–3 hours away; how much you see today depends on when you arrive.

2. 11:30

   Wonosari Tea Plantation, Lawang

   One of East Java's few colonial-era tea estates, at 800–1,200 m with temperatures of 19–26 °C. See how tea is grown, picked and processed in its own factory. There is a (cold!) pool, a small restaurant and a playground. Option: swap for Taman Safari Prigen (extra cost).

3. 13:30

   Coban Rondo waterfall & hedge maze

   Coban Rondo, a cool, leafy waterfall in the Batu hills. Before the falls, try the green hedge maze nearby — fun for kids and adults alike.

4. 15:30

   Check in at Hotel Kartika Wijaya

   A 3-star hotel with a pool, pairing heritage architecture with modern comfort. Lunch at own expense.

5. 16:30

   Sunset on Mount Banyak & food hunting

   In the late afternoon go up Mount Banyak for the sunset; paragliding is possible if the weather allows (own expense). Then look for Batu's local food.

Day 2

1. 09:00

   Songgoriti hot spring

   Your driver is with you all day in Batu and the route can be changed at any time. First stop: a soak at Songgoriti hot spring.

2. 11:00

   Selecta gardens & pool

   A long-standing leisure park with sweeping flower gardens and a mountain-view pool — a favourite photo spot in Batu.

3. 13:30

   Apple picking

   Batu is known for its apples — pick them straight from the tree. Other options (own entrance fees): Jatim Park 2 (Batu Secret Zoo), Museum Angkut, Batu Night Spectacular, Eco Green Park, a tofu factory, Bagong Adventure Human Body Museum, Predator Fun Park or another waterfall.

4. 16:00

   Drive to Cemorolawang village

   From Batu to Cemorolawang village at the foot of Bromo, about 3 hours.

5. 19:00

   Hotel check-in, free evening

   Overnight at Cafe Lava Hostel or Hotel Bromo Permai. Nights up here are cold, so turn in early.

Day 3

1. 03:00

   Jeep up to Mount Penanjakan

   The 4WD Jeep leaves at 03:00 and reaches Mount Penanjakan in about 40 minutes. Bring warm layers — it is cold at the top.

2. 03:40

   Coffee break & waiting for sunrise

   Warm up with coffee or tea and a local snack, then pick your spot as the sun is about to rise.

3. 06:10

   Across the Sea of Sand

   After sunrise, back to the Jeep and across the famous whispering black sands, parking near Luhur Poten temple.

4. 06:40

   Hike to the Bromo crater

   About 45 minutes on foot to the top, with great views all the way, then roughly an hour at the crater rim. Horses can be hired (own expense).

5. 09:30

   Breakfast at the hotel & check-out

   The Jeep takes you back to the hotel for breakfast and check-out.

6. 10:30

   Madakaripura Waterfall or straight to Surabaya

   With no flight to catch, stop at the spectacular Madakaripura Waterfall on the way back. In a hurry? Straight to your Surabaya hotel or the airport.
