About this tour
A more relaxed take on the two-volcano trip. Day one brings the hidden Madakaripura Waterfall and a Bromo sunset from Cemorolawang village. Day two is the sunrise on Mount Penanjakan and the Bromo crater, followed by the drive over Arak-Arak hill to Bondowoso. On day three you hike Ijen at midnight for the blue fire and the world's most acidic crater lake, reaching Ketapang harbour around noon for the ferry to Bali. Proper rest every night.

Pickup in Surabaya
Your driver meets you at Surabaya airport or your hotel for the roughly 3-hour drive to Madakaripura Waterfall.

Madakaripura Waterfall
A tall waterfall hidden deep in a gorge, with curtains of water pouring off the surrounding cliffs. Take it at your own pace.

On to Cemorolawang village
About an hour to Cemorolawang village on the Bromo caldera rim.

Hotel check-in · Bromo sunset
Free time after check-in. Before dusk, find a good spot to watch the sun go down over the caldera.
Day 2

Jeep up to Mount Penanjakan
Start with a hot coffee or tea, then a 40-minute 4WD Jeep ride up Mount Penanjakan, the highest sunrise viewpoint in the area.

It is 0–10 °C at the top, so dress warmly. The colours depend on the weather that morning.

Sea of Sand & the Bromo crater
The Jeep crosses the Sea of Sand (stop for photos whenever you like), then it is about 45 minutes on foot to the Bromo crater rim. Horses available (own expense).

Back to your Cemorolawang hotel for breakfast and check-out.

Over Arak-Arak hill to Bondowoso
Switch to the private car for the winding road over Arak-Arak hill, with lunch at a scenic stop (own expense). Arrive at your Bondowoso hotel around 15:00 and rest.

Depart for Paltuding
Leave at midnight for the 1.5-hour drive to Paltuding. Meet your local guide, get your gas mask and prepare for the hike.

Ijen hike · blue fire
About 1.5 hours up to the rim, then down into the crater for a close look at the blue fire (fit hikers only; depends on weather and volcanic activity).

Sunrise over the Ijen crater lake
As day breaks, take in the turquoise acid lake from the rim and watch miners carrying around 80 kg of sulphur up and down the slopes.

Descent & coffee break
Walk down to meet your driver and rest over coffee. Time permitting, visit the sulphur processing plant in Licin village.

Coffee factory, waterfall, Ketapang harbour
Stops at a coffee factory and a waterfall, arriving at Ketapang harbour around 12:00. The ferry lands in Bali around 15:00 Bali time (1 hour ahead of Java).
